The classes
This course combines traditional language acquisition with a strong emphasis on developing communication, creativity and imagination through the medium of English. Students are encouraged to express themselves continually in English and classes are multinational using the latest in educational technology. The main focus of lessons is on communication and 21st century life skills.
There are a maximum of 17 students per class, average 13 students, divided on level. All students are given a full level test on day one of the course, including a speaking assessment test.
Students enjoy fifteen hours total of language classes per week, three hours per day, in sessions of 1.5 hours divided by a 30 minute break, as appropriate to the overall programme.
The activities and excursions
Every afternoon, after lunch students can enjoy a fully supervised activity outside of the classroom. These activities will depend on the week (s) that you choose to study with us but each week offers a range of fun afternoons such as a visit to Cardiff Castle, bowling or maybe a trip to the beach!
Each Saturday or Sunday we take a full day trip out of Cardiff. These trips include destinations such as Bath, Bristol, Tenby, Theme Parks and even an outdoor activity day where you could try building a raft and climbing!
The location
Classes are delivered at our seasonal centre located at CAVC College, City Centre Campus, Dumballs Road, CF10 5FE, approximately 10 minutes on foot from the central train station.
This facility includes very modern teaching facilities (interactive whiteboards in each class), air-con throughout, supermarket, canteen, coffee shop and Subway sandwich store all on site for students to use in the break / lunchtime, if required. The students are monitored at the College during break and lunch times and are given a full induction on the first day regarding the rules and guidelines for using the amenities at this centre. Members of Peartree staff, or Peartree Marshals are always available, even during class hours, to assist, guide and help our students at all times.
On the first days of the course, we establish a ‘Meeting Point’ in the city centre where students, groups leaders and parents will be met by Peartree Marshals who will guide you to classes on foot.
Student welfare – Safer School Policy
We pay strict attention to student welfare at all times, from the moment that you apply for your child to join the school we follow a strict code of welfare as part of our Safer School Policy. As part of the enrolment procedure you will be sent a student pre-arrival manual that also details the rules of behaviour for the Juniors on our courses.
S.A.F.E.R.
We understand that staying in a foreign country while learning a new language might sometimes be challenging, especially for younger learners. Peartree Languages have therefore deployed teachers and members of staff who are always happy to help. Outside normal school and office hours we have a 24-hour emergency contact number that students, parents, guardians, teachers and group leaders can access during their stay.
Peartree Languages has procedures in place in order to make sure that our young learners have the best experience in a safe and secure environment. Our safeguarding policy is called ‘S.A.F.E.R.’ and is a detailed document which includes all aspects of the safe operation of our school. There is also a special Safeguarding document. This is available for every parent, guardian, teacher, group leader or Educational Tour Operator who is thinking about booking our Junior course. Please contact us for a PDF copy to be sent via email. Furthermore we have a dedicated Safeguarding Officer at the school and a deputy officer, in case of emergency.
Guardianship
For individual students who are coming to study in Cardiff and will stay with a designated guardian (family relative / friend, not own parents), a special procedure is in place to ensure their well-being. The guardian will be asked to provide their full contact details together with a copy of their ID or passport. We will then need to receive written confirmation from the student’s parents with a copy of their own passport attached, confirming the guardian’s details and photo, along with the dates of the course. We require the original signatures of the parents and the guardian in order to complete the application. Only after we have received these documents would we be able to formally enrol the student onto our course. Don’t worry, Peartree Languages will provide a detailed Proof of Guardianship document for the guardians and the parents explaining these procedures in full.
